Barangay Abut Profile

History:

Before the coming of the Spaniards in our country, the people in what is now Barangay Abut found a big hole at the centermost part of the barangay. They believed the hole to be enchanted. When the Spaniards arrived, they tried to find out what was really inside the hole. They sent a person down the hole through a long rope tied around his waist. He was given candles to light his way. When he came out, he got a meter of long leaves, which was believed to have been used as “apin” of a big cooking pot inside.
On the other hand, some say that someone might have fallen inside, and when people on their way to town threw a bamboo pole down, they would still hear groaning when they returned. The people feared that their animals might fall down inside, and so they covered it with big branches of trees and fenced it. Gradually the hole was covered with soil from erosion. People say that about thirty years ago, they could still hear strange sounds of drum and stomping of feet specially at night, coming from the big hole. This is how the barangay got its name, “Abut” being the Ilocano term for hole.
