History:
Before the Spanish regime, there was a pomelo-like tree which was planted at the center of the barangay. The fruit was very sour, and the people learned to use it for giving taste to their food. The name of the tree was “cabugao”. At that time there were still a number of wild animals in the nearby forest like pigs, chicken, deer, and monkeys. AS the fruit of the cabugao was about to ripen, a strange-looking bird with a bright red crown on its head came, alighted on the tree and began to destroy the fruit.
The old man who was taking care of the tree saw what was going on. He ran to the tree to drive the bird away and shouted as loudly as he could, “Calao-bugao”. The other people heard the old man shouting and joined in the shouting “Calao-bugao, Calao-bugao” until the bird flew away. From that time on, the barangay came to be known as Calabugao, as the people would recall that they drove the “Calao” bird away from their “Cabugao” tree. Unfortunately, the tree is no longer in existence at the barangay, and of course, the big bird with a bright red crown do not visit them anymore.
