Barangay Parian Profile

History:

Tragedy, albeit romantic, surrounds the naming of Barangay Parian, a place whose inhabitants are law abiding and religious. From their early childhood, they were taught to obey the law, and anyone who broke the laws is correspondingly punished. For generations, the place was peaceful and uneventful. Then there was a chief who had an only daughter, Paring, who was beautiful and innocent looking. She was nurtured with an early training of obeying laws but she had the tendency of trying new things. She often broke petty laws. Being the daughter of the chief, however, her wrong doings were often ignored and overlooked.

At that time, for the daughter of a chief to fall in love with a stranger and to meet him in secret was considered a capital offence, punishable by hanging. And so, when the people learned about a secret love affair, they informed the chief who immediately called a meeting of the whole barangay. When questioned about the matter, the lovers admitted their love for each other and courageously informed the chief of their readiness to pay the price. They were then sentenced to die by hanging in three days. Yang, who was hanged first, shouted “PARRR…”, but died before he could complete the name of his lover. There upon, Paring grabbed the dagger of her guard, shouted “YANG” and stabbed herself to death. Soon after, the chief resigned.

Years later, the people amended their law. But before they did, they also called their place, which at that time was also a sitio of Madayegdeg, “PAR-YANG”, in memory of the two lovers. Later, when it was made into a full barangay, the Parian was adopted.
