San Fernando awarded as RP’s most competitive city

 
     
 

For the fifth time, the City Government of San Fernando headed by Mayor Pablo C. Ortega was again among the top performing cities in the recently completed Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP) by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center.

Along with other 24 cities that ranked at the top of three categories in a competitiveness survey, the City of San Fernando was recognized in a simple ceremony during the presentation of the official results of the PCCRP 2007 on July 4, 2008, at the Grand Ballroom of the Intercontinental Hotel in Makati City. The award was received by City Mayor Pablo C. Ortega.

According to AIM, the PCCRP is a flagship research undertaking of the AIM Policy Center, which seeks to identify the best cities in the Philippines in which to live, work and operate a business.

The 2007 survey covered 90 cities and rated them on the basis of (6) six competitiveness drivers which include dynamism of local economy, cost of doing business, infrastructure, human resources and training, responsiveness of LGU to business needs and quality of life. The cities were classified into metro, mid-sized and small.

For the metro cities category, the top performing in alphabetical order were davao, Lapu-Lapu, Makati, Manila, marikina and Quezon City.

Among the mid-sized cities, the top-performing cities in alphabetical order were Cabanatuan, General Santos, Lucena, Olongapo, San Pablo, Tagum and Tarlac.

From the 45 small-sized cities, the top performing cities in alphabetical order were Bayawan, Calapan, Calbayog, Dagupan, Dipolog, Laoag, San Fernando (LU), Malaybalay, Naga, Surigao, Tagbilaran and Tuguegarao.

Since the launching of the program in 1999, the City of San Fernando has been included in the top 10 competitive cities. During the first round in 1999, it was ranked 4th and eventually improved when it ranked 3rd in the second round in 2002. In 2003, it became number 2 in its category, topping two competitiveness drivers namely, human resources and training and quality of life. In 2005, the city was number 1 in linkages and accessibility and responsiveness to business needs.

During the presentation of the 2007 official results, the City of San Fernando was assessed as number 1 in human resources and training, infrastructure and responsiveness to business needs.
