The city government, led by Mayor Pablo C. Ortega, together with the police here led by Police Director Pedro Obaldo, Jr. scored anew against illegal fishing here yesterday when they intercepted over 100 kilos of huge Caranx variety, locally known as “bubuslo,” which was caught by dynamite.
Dolores Gurtiza, city fish examiner, said that the illegally-caught baskets of fish worth over P150, 000, were allegedly owned by a certain “Wawit” from Agoo, La Union, who was able to elude authorities.
In an interview, Mayor Ortega said that this latest apprehension was a result of his directive to implement a one-entrance policy at the Auxilliary Wet Market to curb illegally-caught fish’ entry and apprehend violators. It was the first confiscation since th rule was enforced.
The said haul is sold to wholesalers for a price of P90 per kilo and passed to consumers the price of P15.00 a kilo, according to Gurtiza. She added that upon inspection, the innards of the fish exploded and the spines were broken, while its flesh disintegrated easily which, proved they were dynamited.
Obaldo warned violators to stop the illegal activity for they would not go unpunished by the law. The suspect is still at large as of this writing while the catch was distributed to various charitable institutions yesterday. |
