Amid the unstable rise of gas globally, this city would soon launch a Horse Patrol, deemed to be the first in the country.

Its maiden public appearance was conducted by its innovator, Pol. Supt. Pedro Obaldo, Jr., the city chief of police and Mayor Pablo C. Ortega, who enjoyed a short ride aboard the horse-drawn carrier, Wednesday morning.

Mayor Ortega, in elation, said that this may be one solution to rising gas problems aside from being environment-friendly and tourist-booster. For this, he directed Obaldo to make some more.

The open stagecoach, will accommodate four policemen, including its handler, would be initially ply tourists areas in the metropolis such as at the Poro Point, where the biggest hotel-resort here is located.

Obaldo, in an interview, said that he has hatched the idea when he happened to visit the internet aside from owning and keeping a stable of horses in his home, one of this, he used in the public appearance. “I also happen to be the only policeman to know horse-back riding,” he added, and eventually broached at the idea.

Obaldo added that he spent around P35, 000 for the horse and the carriage, which is made of iron grills, upholstered seats and rubber tires. It was painted with white, complete with police logos.

The Horse Patrol would also help augment foot and bike patrols in the city, in prevention and pursuance of criminal elements in the streets.

Obaldo also said that for the meantime, route of the Patrol would prioritize the tourist destinations until the creation of more carriers.

“We are noted for peace and order so we would want also to be pioneers in crime prevention systems that are very effective and yet it is economical,” Mayor Ortega said.
