DepEd Asec leads “Brigada” drive in La Union

 
     
 

Brigada Eskwela, a nationwide school repair and cleaning program by the Department of Education (DepEd) was staged here with Assistant Sec. for Finance Jesus Galvan leading, local government and school officials, police personnel and students in a countrywide simultaneous activity on May 18, 2009.

Earlier, a motorcade was held around the city also participated by barangay patrols and the city police before a short program in which the Assistant Secretary was the guest of honor and speaker at the Catbangen Central School which also saw City Vice-Mayor Pancrasio Nisce and Dr. Linda Laudencia, City Schools Superintendent gracing the affair.

The Brigada Eskwela is a yearly event before the start of the school curriculum in June, which involves parents, students, police, teachers, officials and resident volunteers in minor repairs of facilities and cleaning for the safe occupancy of students when school days return in their respective school jurisdictions throughout the country. The activity will last until May 22.

The staging of the Brigada was made compulsory by the DepEd in all public elementary and high schools beginning this school year. It is in compliance with the directive of DepEd Sec. Jesli Lapus calling for the institutionalization of the one-week drive which is also called National Schools Maintenance Week. It was initiated by then Sec. Edilberto De Jesus as a joint voluntary action by parents and community leaders.
