ENVIRONMENT MONTH CELEBRATION 2010

 
     
 

The City of San Fernando celebrated the environment month in line with the proclamation of the United Nations Environmental Programme of 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity, with the theme Samut-saring Buhay, Isang Planeta, Isang Kinabukasan. It provides a venue to focus on global environmental issues such as climate change and the incredible diversity of life on earth.

A week long celebration was conducted from June 21-25.

First Day
City Mayor Pablo C. Ortega, PENRO, DepEd Dist. I, City Schools Division, Department of Agriculture (DA-RFUI), Cadaclan Elementary students and parents participated in the Soft Launching of the Tree Parenting Project at Botanical Garden, Brgy. Cadaclan.

Elementary students initiated the tree planting. They were advised to nurture the plants and involved themselves in the establishment of nursery in schools, planting of forest/fruit-bearing trees, care and maintain the trees they have planted.

After the tree planting activity, a short program was held at Botanical Garden in line with the Tree Parenting project. DENR Regional Director Samuel Penafiel expressed his concern to our environment, telling the participants especially the students, “Kalikasan – dapat Ipaglaban para sa Kinabukasan.”


Second Day
A Forum on Climate Change was held at the Barangay Hall to serve as a venue for the industries to gain knowledge on climate change and on green technologies that they can adopt and promote. It was conducted in coordination with the DENR-Region I.

The participants were provided with information on adapting to Climate Change, a menu of green options for climate change adaptation and mitigating measures that can be integrated to the work plan of industries. The process-oriented framework for sustainable development of river basin and coastal areas through integrated coastal management implementation was also presented and were enjoined them to adopt 101 ways for a greener Lifestyle Program.

It was a whole day affair participated by the Planning Officers, Pollution Control Officers, Purchasing Officers and Environment Officers from the City of San Fernando.

Third and Fourth Day
A two-day training for the making of Bags from used Tarpaulin was held at Canaoay Barangay Hall. The training was sponsored by the City Gov’t of San Fernando, CENRO, DTI for the residents of Kasay Sanktuaryo. They were trained in making bags out of used tarpaulin to have an option as to their livelihood especially during rainy season. The training is a continuation of operation:baklas. Tarpaulins removed during the campaign and election period were the materials used in making bags of any size.

Trainor from Agoo gave instructions to the residents in making bags and the materials needed. The residents will benefit from the sales of the bag as a means of livelihood fund. Department of Trade and Industry will also help in the promotion and marketing.

Tarpaulin was recycled and reused. Certainly maraming pera sa basura.

Fifth Day
As good stewards of the environment, the City Government of San Fernando spearheaded the treeplanting activity at the La Union Botanical Garden. This is in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 643 signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004, Arbor Day was institutionalized in the Philippines and it is being observed every June 25 through the planting of trees and ornamental plants and other forms of relevant activities.

It aims to promote a healthier ecosystem for the people through the rehabilitation and regreening of the environment and to make the entire country a greener and healthier place to live in.

Members of the Association of Regional Executives (AREX), city employees, private agencies, youth organizations, schools and other entities participated on the said event.
