Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later when Earth Hour become a global sustainability movement with more than 50million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour.
Earth Hour 2011 became the biggest Earth Hour ever. There were 135 countries that took part in the said event, and many countries who participated were first timers.
March 26, 2011, Saturday, the City of San Fernando thru the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources organized the said event with no less than the City Officials and Employees of San Fernando headed by Mayor Pablo C. Ortega, students from the different schools, private sectors in the city participated in the program.
At exactly 8:30 in the evening, the City of San Fernando was again engulfed in 60 minutes of darkness. Candles were lighted and all participants affixed their signatures in a tarpaulin to show their support and make a stand against climate change.
Prior to the lighting off, a short program that features local stand-up comedians, entertains the audience with a theme on global conservation with a combination of comedy tricks.
