Senior citizens are indeed deemed treasures of our society for they have continuously shared their unconditional love and care for us. Throughout our lives, they have gone through great lengths to bring us to where we are today. Their wealth of experience and knowledge taught us valuable life lessons that guide us to become wiser, happier and more passionate human beings.

On October 4, 2017, more than 1500 elders and day care students took part in the event titled “People’s Day for Senior Citizens”, as part of the National Elderly Filipino Week celebration, held at Pacoy Ortega Gymnasium, City of San Fernando, La Union.

In line with this year’s theme: “Pagkilala sa Kakayahan, Ambag at Paglahok ng Nakatatanda sa Lipunan”, the celebration aims to honor and recognize our local senior citizens for their significant contribution to the development of our city. The event also aims to bring senior citizens and children together to foster closer relationships and to develop a sense of love for one another.

During the program, our local senior citizens showcased their unfading talent through different presentations. However, it was Irene Borja from Barangay Lingsat, who did a solo singing performance, and George Balancio from Barangay Bungro, who did a “Daniw” (Ilocano poem) performance poetry, who stood-out among the crowd because of their impressive and entertaining solo acts. A few senior citizens also performed a heartwarming singing presentation dedicated to Mayor Hermenegildo “Dong" Gualberto as a post birthday present which the Mayor has wholeheartedly appreciated. Day care students also performed singing and dancing presentations to entertain and bring smiles to our elders.

The event also included various activities that focused on the senior citizen’s health and well-being. They were treated to pampering sessions such as massage, manicure, pedicure, hair treatment and facial treatment. They were also able to avail of medical and dental services, and received free medications and hygiene kits. Meanwhile, day care students also engaged in activities such as story-telling, community dancing, participation of parlor games and viewing of magic shows.

Natividad A. Pelaez, the President of the City Federation of Senior Citizens Association, Incorporated commended Governor Pacoy Ortega and Mayor Dong Gualberto for their collaborative efforts and continuous support in advocating the overall welfare of our local senior citizens.

The celebration was a great opportunity for our elderly to prove that old age is not a hindrance in creating a positive impact to our society. Their physical body may be weak but their strong state of mind is what inspires and encourages everyone to overcome our limitations to make a difference.

The Elderly Filipino Week celebration is observed every first week of October by virtue of Proclamation No. 470 signed on Sept. 26, 1994, by former President Fidel Ramos. This celebration also recognizes awareness and promotes advocacy on elder abuse prevention.
