Local literary artists and enthusiasts gathered for the 1st Manuel E. Arguilla Memorial Lecture (MAML) held at the ABC Hall on June 19, 2026, in celebration of literature, culture, and the enduring legacy of an Ilokano writer, Manuel E. Arguilla.

The event commenced with opening remarks from Ms. Djuna R. Alcantara, President of GUMIL La Union, followed by welcoming remarks from Mr. Mark M. Aquino, Tourism Operations Officer I of the Local Economic and Business Development Office – Tourism and Cultural Affairs Division (LEBDO-TCAD). Additionally, Ms. Rishelle R. Torrero, Head for Partnership of the 2026 MAML, delivered a message, emphasizing the very purpose of the event.

The lecture featured a series of presentations from Ms. Rio Jewel Marie G. Jumalon, Mr. Nino Medina, and Prof. Junley L. Lazaga, who shared their expertise and perspectives on literature, culture, and education, enriching participants’ understanding of Manuel E. Arguilla’s enduring contributions to Philippine letters.

As a commemorative event, Mr. Rigenald Sonza, Manuel E. Arguilla’s third-generation descendant, delivered an inspiring message to the participants.

Mr. Adrian M. Bugnosen, President of the GUMIL La Union Youth Club (GLUYC), delivered the lecture synthesis, providing a comprehensive reflection on the discussions, while Mr. Smith Lagdaan, Vice President of the GLUYC, performed an intermission number.

The program concluded with closing remarks from Mr. Arjie C. Rivera, Convener of the 2026 MAML, who expressed gratitude to the speakers, guests, partners, and participants for making the inaugural lecture series a success.

The event was made possible through the collaboration of the City Government, through LEBDO-TCAD, and the organizers MAML, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving and promoting the region’s literary and cultural heritage.
