In line with the City Government’s commitment for effective community engagement, the Office of the City Mayor launched “Padyak Bisita sa Barangay” (PBB) last Sunday, September 20, 2020, in Barangay Nagyubuyuban as the pilot community. Led by City Mayor Alf Ortega, a team of more than 25 bicycle enthusiasts joined the kick-off activity along with City Councilors John Orros, Tony Jucar, and Atty. Rizalde Laudencia. PBB is generally anchored in the City of San Fernando’s pledge to aid the country in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) by the year 2030. The integrated 17 SDGs adopted by the Philippines aims to fast-track the development of communities and sectors which need it the most. Through the PBB, the City Government hopes to reach out to residents in the City’s remote communities by using bicycles as a mode of transportation. Because the project encourages direct involvement with barangays experiencing varied challenges in access to goods and services, PBB allows the community to directly share their concerns with City officials present during the visits and for the City Government to know and understand the community’s immediate needs. This dialogue is essential in formulating data-driven measures in response to identified challenges, thus promoting inclusive growth. To make each visit productive, the City Government provides grocery packs, free grooming services, and other forms of assistance that directly benefit the community. As PBB’s pilot community, residents of Sitio Calaungan in Barangay Nagyubyuban received a total of 70 grocery packs. By joining the visits, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod also aim to share information and updates on relevant local legislation to the residents. As the project continues, PBB also hopes to be an avenue to discover potential agri-tourism areas since most of the visited barangays are agricultural communities. The City Government is relentless in serving the people in diverse ways despite the limitations of the pandemic. Inspired by #SanFernandoAyayatenKa spirit, these initiatives prove that together, our City is committed to moving forward and rise above the present and future challenges.
