In celebration of 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood until 2026, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and the City Government of San Fernando, La Union unveiled the national historical marker “San Fernando Landas ng Pagkabansang Pilipino” located at the People’s Park on December 2, 2024.
Mr. Alvin R. Alcid, NHCP Deputy Executive Director for Programs and Projects, and City Mayor Hermenegildo A. Gualberto led the unveiling ceremony of the historical marker. Also present in the ceremonial unveiling were the staff of NHCP, City Councilor Dr. Quintin L. Balcita, Jr., City Government department heads, Local Tourism Unit of Local Economic and Business Development Office (LEBDO), uniformed personnel from Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire and Protection, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
Afterwards, Mr. Alcid, Mayor Dong, and Ms. Rizalyn D. Medrano, LEBDO Department Head signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) “Katibayan ng Paglilipat at Pagtanggap ng Panandang Pangkasaysayan” and delivered their respective messages.
The installation of this Philippine Nationhood Trail historical marker marks the role of the city when President Emilio Aguinaldo passed by as part of the escape route of the First Philippine Republic into the mountains during the Philippine-American War 1899-1901.
Let us appreciate the rich history of the #PeoplesCity, kakabsat! We continue to preserve the story of nationalism with this newly installed historical site here at #SanFernandoTayo.
