One Thousand (1,000) mangrove seedlings were planted along the waterways of Barangay Bancusay last Thursday (July 16, 2020) as part of the City’s greening program.

According to Rose Ann Valdez of the City Environment Natural Resources Office (CENRO), this is part of the City’s regular programs towards reforestation and greening. “About 1 km of waterways were planted with mangrove seedlings”.

Mangrove trees can serve as protection to waterways or shorelines from damaging storm and hurricane winds, waves, and floods. This also prevents erosion by stabilizing sediments through their roots. It can also maintain water quality and clarity by filtering pollutant sediments, and it also serves as dwelling ground for fish especially in the creek area.

Those who took part in the tree planting were uniformed personnel from the Philippine Navy, Coast Guard, Airforce, City’s BFP and BJMP, CENRO staff, KMCCO-IDS staff, and non-government organization, Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan (LINK).

Strengthening its thrust towards environment protection is one of pillars of the City Government of San Fernando, La Union. The City Government will continue to support and sustain programs to give back to our Mother Earth.
